Completely agree. This is like Christmas in July for me (along with the other referenced material and the OSTP report). I didn’t think there would be this type of metascience and evaluation emphasis in my working lifetime. I’m here for it! Kudos to y’all creating and capitalizing on the policy window opening for well thought out metascience!

In isolation, this recommendation makes complete sense. None of this stuff that everyone is suddenly buzzing about under the appellation "metascience" is particularly new or original; it's just been repackaged and is overdue for implementation. However, in the context of the hot mess these agencies have become since January 2025, and all that's shifting within them, it's hard to see how clean and actionable metascience experiments could be run except in a very limited way.

Certainly in any circumstance such units would need a direct line to leadership "clients," which is easier said than done even when an agency actually has leadership ... and NSF currently does not! And I note with irony that while your recommendation for these units to focus internally and not also fund external grants is sensible, the same FY27 budget request calling for establishing a Metascience Unit at NSF also calls for zeroing out SBE, which of course is the home of the Science of Science program.
